Ketogenic Dietary Therapy

Ketogenic dietary therapy is not a recognised medical component of brain cancer management and therefore will not be funded by the NHS.  In order to ensure that donations from Astro Brain Tumour Fund are directly contributing to the evidence base for this potential adjunct therapy, all patients undertaking ketogenic dietary therapy with Matthew’s Friends must agree for their cases to be written up (on an anonymous basis) for potential publication. If ketogenic dietary therapy proves to be of benefit in clinical trials, we would then move forward with lobbying for NHS funding through the NICE process, but the first step is to establish if ketogenic dietary therapy can be of measurable benefit.  The type of benefits being measured include seizure control and quality of life as well as tumour behaviour.

The Matthew’s Friends clinical team will need to discuss this possible treatment option with each patient’s local neuro-oncology team in order to ensure their collaboration. Throughout this process patients will be guided by a Registered Dietician specialising in ketogenic dietary therapy, as well as the full patient support team at Matthew’s Friends. Support includes extensive recipe resources to help move the patient towards ketosis in a safe and controlled manner.

If you are a patient who would like to know more about potentially becoming part of this exciting research, please email enq@matthewsfriends.org or call 01342 836571 for further details.

WE DO NOT RECOMMEND THAT ANYONE UNDERTAKES A KETOGENIC DIET WITHOUT THE FULL SUPPORT OF A REGISTERED DIETICIAN SPECIALISING IN KETOGENIC DIETARY THERAPY.

More information about ketogenic diets can be found on the Matthew’s Friends charity website www.matthewsfriends.org and on their clinical services website www.mfclinics.com
